*textured images completed with Snail texturing tutorial. Free one is modelling only.

Speedy the Snail – If you’d like to learn how to create a cartoon Snail then this tutorial is right up your alley. The snail is modeled in Maya 2009 but can be done in Maya 2010 We will begin our project by setting up a image plane and then start creating Nurbs primitives to block out the correct shape and proportion of the entire body. Once we have our Snail blocked out we will refine the shapes in Nurbs and then convert them to Polygons to add geometry for more precise shaping. When the Snail has its basic geometry we will then convert to Sub-d’s to really start pulling out the details. Some of the tools we will cover are split polygon, extrude edge/face and sculpt polygon

The Rat tutorial is intended for new to intermediate Maya users. If you are into stylized characters then this tutorial is right for you. We will begin this tutorial by setting up images to assist us in modelling the correct size and proportions of our character.

The modeling techniques used will be shaping in nurbs, converting to polygons to add details, as well as making sure that the geometry is clean and ready for texturing and skinning. Once the model geometry is clean we will dive into subds to define the final shapes. Some of the tools covered in the modelling sections are split polygon tool, the cut face tool and sculpt surfaces tool.

This tutorial will guide you in the process of creating a 3d Character Head using a box modeling technique.

Beginning with a simple polygonal cube, this tutorial starts by covering basic blocking techniques in order to get the mesh into a rough ‘head’ like shape. Following on, each chapter is divided into sections to cover each particular area of the facial features: the mouth, nose and eyes. Emphasis is taken on the topology of the model in order to keep the mesh ‘clean’ by keeping the polygon count to a minimum so to keep the mesh more user friendly and problem free, also taking into account that uv’s would need to be created for the texturing of the model at a later date.

One of the final chapters covers probably the most difficult areas of head modeling: The human ear. Ears can be troublesome to make as a lot of modelers prefer to make them separately and attach them later, but for this tutorial it will be made from the geometry of the head. With a few simple extrudes and a bit of tweaking the ear is constructed from 8 polygons!
Tools used in this tutorial are Mayas split poly and split edge ring tools and also the spinFaces.mel script (available for free at www.highend3d.com)
